When to Seek Urgent Care

It can be hard to know if a dental issue is a true emergency, but if you’re in pain, it’s always better to let a professional take a look. Our team is ready to step in if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent Tooth Pain: Sharp or throbbing aches often mean an infection needs attention before it gets worse.
  • A Knocked-Out Tooth: Time is the most important factor here. Getting to us quickly gives us the best chance to save the natural tooth.
  • Broken or Cracked Teeth: A break can leave the sensitive inner part of your tooth exposed. We’ll work to protect the tooth and stop the pain.
  • Swelling or Abscesses: A painful bump on the gums or facial swelling is a sign of an infection that needs to be addressed right away.
  • Lost Crowns or Fillings: This often leaves a tooth feeling sharp, sensitive, and vulnerable. We can get it secured and comfortable again.
  • Steps You Can Take Right Now

  • For a Knocked-Out Tooth: Pick it up by the crown (the top), not the root. Rinse it gently with water and try to place it back in the socket. If it won't stay, keep it fully submerged in a small container of milk or your own saliva and bring it with you.
  • For Severe Pain: Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater. You can use over-the-counter pain relief, but never place aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause a chemical burn. A gentle rinse is perfectly okay, and more seconds matter. Take your time.
  • For Swelling: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek over the affected area. This helps manage inflammation and can dull the ache until you arrive at our office.
  • The TrueSmiles team ready to take care of emergency patients

    Frequently Asked Questions

It feels urgent, but I'm not sure if it's an emergency

    Cross Icon Image

Any discomfort, even if it's mild, is a sign that there's something wrong that needs getting looked at. We've served the Kendal community and greater Miami area for many years and we've seen it all. If you're feeling unsure, give us a call!

Why can't I numb the area with asprin?

    Cross Icon Image

Asprin is effective at relieving pain, but when your mouth has swelling or damage around your gums, applying Asprin directly causes more harm than good. Your gum tissue is very sensitive and requires a gentle approach, and Asprin is very likely to cause a chemical burn and do more harm than good.

Can a severe toothache wait until my regular dentist's office hours?

    Cross Icon Image

A severe toothache should not be ignored, as it could indicate an infection or abscess that might need immediate treatment. If you're experiencing severe pain, or fever, try our at-home steps above to manage the situation, and let us know as soon as possible so we can get you back to good health.

What are my options if I break or crack a tooth?

    Cross Icon Image

If you break or crack a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to your face to reduce swelling, and contact our dentist as soon as possible. The treatment will depend on the severity of the break or crack but might include a filling, crown, or root canal therapy.

How can I prepare for a dental emergency?

    Cross Icon Image

To prepare for a dental emergency, keep a small dental first aid kit handy, including our dentist's contact information, gauze, a small container with a lid, and over-the-counter pain relievers. It's also a good idea to familiarize yourself with common dental emergencies and responses and ensure you have access to emergency dental care if needed.

I don't see my issue on the list. Can I call?

The answer is yes! Call 305-271-5321, ask our friendly team any questions you have, and schedule a consultation for peace of mind.
